1 not like something or someone else, or not like before: You look different. Have you had your hair cut?
(+ from): Our two sons are very different from each other. (+ to): Her jacket's a bit different to mine. (+ than) AmE: The estimate is different than we expected.
2 (only before noun) separate; distinct: He took the photo from three different angles. | There are many different types of fabric.
3 (only before noun) another: I think she's moved to a different job now.
(+ from): This is a different girl from the one he used to go out with.
4 various; several: There are several different books on the subject.
5 spoken unusual, often in a way that you do not like: His new jacket is certainly different, but I can't imagine wearing it myself!
— differently adverb: The two words sound the same but they're spelled differently. USAGE NOTE: DIFFERENT GRAMMAR Teachers often prefer different(ly) from, but different(ly) to is equally common in spoken British English (though not usual in American English). Different(ly) than is also used, especially in American English. Note that you never say different of. SPELLING The noun is difference: The difference between your country and mine (NOT the different.).
